Originally built in 1893, this large and gracious remodeled home is located in Camden on coveted Chestnut Street. Chestnut House is only 1½-blocks to Laite Beach (a sandy harbor beach) and an easy 3-block walk into the heart of town, making it perfectly situated for a delightful stroll for morning coffee, unique shopping opportunities, or a delicious dinner out.
Although officially in town, Chestnut House is situated on a gorgeous 2/3 of an acre lot filled with beautiful perennial gardens and expansive grassy areas surrounded by huge maple and oak trees, making it an idyllic in-town retreat. During the summer, you’ll catch glimpses of the water from almost every room and even occasionally spot a windjammer through the trees. Once the leaves have dropped, the seasonal views of Camden Harbor and Penobscot Bay are spectacular!
This almost 3,000-square foot New England home has been lovingly renovated and updated over the years with close attention to detail. Large windows, in combination with skylights, provide breathtaking views of the park-like yard and offer an abundance of natural light. The deck is right off the family room/kitchen area. It provides easy access to the outdoors so – whether on the deck or in the yard – you can relax with your morning coffee and a good book or celebrate good times with extended family and friends.
Chestnut House is newly furnished and beautifully decorated, creating visually pleasing and welcoming spaces that will become the backdrop for your perfect Maine get-away.
The first floor has many different rooms ideal for both joyous gatherings and for quiet retreats. The comfortable living room is just one step up from the entry foyer with its tromp l’oeil painted walls of Camden harbor and surrounding hills. The living room has a cozy fireplace and television and can be both the perfect spot to entertain or for the family to curl up and watch a movie together. Nearby is the charming dining room, which has period lighting and a dining table made from 125 year-old repurposed barn door wood with comfortable seating for eight.
A short hallway takes you to a private, cheerful, air-conditioned guest room with queen bed and en suite bath with tub/shower. This welcoming bedroom includes a large bay window overlooking the backyard and gardens with seasonal bay views. Also off the hallway, you’ll find a well-equipped open kitchen adjoining a relaxed family room – both with beautiful views and easy access to the deck and gardens and yard beyond. The family room is another gathering spot, with a unique corner fireplace, large television and entertainment center and plenty of comfortable seating.
Finally, just off the family room is the library, stocked with plenty of books for the whole family’s reading pleasure and also provides a great space to play card games or work a puzzle together. The first floor also offers a powder room next to the library and a large, bright kitchen pantry with lots of storage as well as an abundance of counter space to work.
The second floor is home to three inviting air-conditioned bedrooms – including the master bedroom suite – and separate laundry room. The main staircase takes you first to the guest bedrooms, one with a queen bed with windows looking out on the front and side yards and the other, a cozy smaller bedroom with a double/full bed and terrific view of the backyard and seasonal water views. These two bedrooms share a bath with a new walk-in shower unit. Beyond these two bedrooms is the bright laundry area, which connects through to the gorgeous master bedroom suite. This large bedroom has expansive views of the gardens and backyard with seasonal views of the water in one direction and Mount Battie in the other. It also has spectacular views of the sunrise all year long – and blackout shades for those who prefer to sleep later. The air-conditioned master bedroom has a king bed, window seat and a comfy reading chair. The master en suite bath has a double sink vanity, a jetted tub and separate shower. A back stairway leads from the master bedroom down to the library for extra privacy.
